Advantages of Eddy Current Sensors

Eddy current sensors are a type of non-contacting position sensors.

They are used to measure the position, or change of position of a conductive target. Eddy current Sensors are sometimes referred to as inductive sensors.

The Working Principle of Eddy Current Sensors

Eddy current sensors operate in magnetic fields. The driver will create an alternating current in a sensing coil in the end of a probe. This alternating current will create an alternating magnetic field inducing small currents in the target material; the currents created are called eddy currents. These eddy currents create an opposing magnetic field which will resist the field which is being generated by the probe coil. The distance between the probe and the target will determine the interaction of the magnetic fields.

As the distance between the probe and the target changes, the electronics sense the change in the field interaction and the voltage output produced is proportional to the change in distance.

Advantages of Eddy Current Sensors

When compared to other non-contacting position sensors, eddy current sensors have the following advantages

·         Typically less expensive than other options

·         Have a good tolerance for dirty environments

·         Insensitive to materials being in the gap between the probes and the targets

Advantages of Eddy Current sensors over Capacitive or Laser Displacement sensors

You would choose an eddy current sensor over a capacitive sensor depending on the environment you are working in. A capacitive sensor is influenced by anything which comes between the sensor face and the target. An eddy current sensor is therefore well suited to environments inside combustion engines and semiconductor clean rooms because they are insensitive to materials being in this gap.

You would choose an eddy current sensor over a laser displacement sensor depending on the temperature of the environment you are working in. Eddy Current sensors can withstand higher ambient temperatures than laser sensors and the condensation from vapours and fluids will not degrade the performance of eddy current sensors.
