What is an Eddy Current Sensor?

What is an Eddy Current Sensor?

What is an Eddy Current Sensor?

Eddy Current is a type of non-contacting sensor technology. Eddy Current Sensors are non-contacting position sensors used for measuring the change of position of a specified target.

Eddy Current sensors are capable of high resolution measurement and are also referred to as inductive sensors.

How Eddy Current Sensors work

Eddy Current Sensors work in magnetic fields. The driver creates an alternating current in a sensing coil at the end of a probe. The alternating current then creates an alternating magnetic field which induces smaller currents within the target material, these currents are referred to as Eddy Currents. The Eddy Currents then create an opposing magnetic field which resists the field being generated by the probe coil. The distance between the probe and the target will determine the interaction of the magnetic field.

The distance between the probe and the target can then be determined by the change in the field interaction and an output is produced proportional to the change in the distance.

What is an Eddy Current Sensor Used for?

Eddy Current sensors are a type of position measuring device and are useful in the following applications;

·         Automation applications

·         Machine tool mounting

·         Precision stage positioning

·         Final assembly of delicate machinery

·         Monitoring drive shafts

·         Monitoring vibration measurements

Why choose Eddy Current Sensors?

Eddy current sensors are high precision and are often selected for applications because

·         They have a tolerance for dirt so are functional in dirty environments

·         They continue to work if there is material in between the probe and the target

·         They are less expensive than laser interferometers and capacitive sensors which can also do the same job

·         They are unaffected by most contaminants

Eddy Current Sensors from Ixthus

Our range of Eddy Current sensors come from our supplier Kaman. Through Kaman we can offer a wide range of sensor types both standard and customised. They are suitable for a range of environments including either high or low pressure and either high or low temperature. We can measure either magnetic or non-magnetic targets and offer high accuracy.
