Wheel Profile Measurement
Wheel profile measurement is a process used within the rail industry. A wheel profile measurement gauge is used to measure the continuous tread profile of train or tram wheels.
At Ixthus, devices for wheel profile measurement are part of our product range. See all of our wheel profile measurement devices here.
What is wheel profile measurement?
The “wheel profile” refers to the thickness of the wheel, so, wheel profile measurement is the measurement of the thickness of the wheel. Over time the wear and tear on railway wheels can affect the quality of them and have an impact on the interaction between the wheels and the rails. Worn and damaged wheels can cause the railway vehicles to become uncomfortable or even unsafe. This is why it is vital that wheel profile measurement takes place on a regular basis for both heavy duty and light rail sectors.
Very often instruments for wheel profile measurement are hand held devices and can be used whilst the wheel is still attached to the vehicle. They use laser scanning systems and contactless technologies to measure the wheel profile.
The use of devices like these eliminates human errors; they make measuring wheel profiles quick, easy and accurate. Software for wheel wear data is also provided.

Our wheel profile measurement devices come from our supplier Riftek. We have been working with Riftek, supplying products to the UK for over 15 years.
The IKP series is a range of wheel profile measurement gauges which are used for measuring
· Wheel flange height
· Wheel flange thickness
· Rim thickness
They also offer full profile scanning and analysis of the wheel rolling surface.
The IKP series comes in three different models. The standard series, for railway wheels, the short series for tramway wheels and the super short series, also for tramway wheels.
