LVDT is an acronym, it stands for Linear Variable Differential Transformer. LVDTs are a common type of non contacting linear transducer.
Linear transducers are used to measure linear displacement or movement of other components.
LVDTs have seven main components within them, they are; primary coil, two secondary coils, a ferromagnetic core (or slug), a tube (or bobbin), a shield and a shaft. LVDTs have different types of uses. They can be used as the main transducer within the application to measure displacement and convert it into an electrical signal. Or, they can be used as a secondary transducer, in these types of applications an LVDT is used to measure either force, weight or pressure.
