Railway Gauges

We have a range of railway gauges which we have been supplying into the rail industry for many years.

Our railway gauges are aimed at measuring and monitoring the thickness of the wheels of railway vehicles and the track itself. We also have gauges available which measure the diameter of the wheels to ensure there is no damage that could cause the rail vehicle to become unsafe.

Railway Gauges

Our range of gauges for the railway include;

  • Rail Wheel Profile measuring gauges
  • Rail Wheel Diameter measuring gauges
  • Rail Wheel Back-to-Back distance measuring gauges
  • Rail Wheel Brake Disc Profile gauges
  • Rail Head Profile measuring gauges
  • Rail Wheel Real-time Geometry 3D Measuring System

Wheel Profile – are devices used to measure the thickness of the profile of the wheel, this is the surface of the wheel which touches the railway track. This section of the wheel can often show signs of wear. Using a wheel profile gauge to check the thickness of the wheel ensures accurate measurement without the risk of human error.

Our wheel profile gauges are easy to use, handheld instruments. They use a laser to measure wheel flange height, thickness, and rim thickness. They are highly accurate and efficient; results are immediately shown on the digital display.

Wheel Diameter - these measure the overall diameter of the wheel. The diameter can also be affected by general wear and tear or can be damaged during use. Measuring the wheel diameter ensure the wheel is in good condition and fit for use.

We would recommend using one of our devices for taking this measurement rather than measuring by hand as they are highly efficient and accurate. They are battery powered so they can easily be used in the field.

Back-to-Back Distance– this device is used for measuring the distance between railway transport wheels ensuring they are at the correct safe distance from each other. This is done at a routine check-up and examination or during repair processes to check wheel formation sets.

Brake Disc Profile – these are used to check the thickness of the brake discs on railway vehicles which is another critical safety measure required within the railway. The disk brake profile gauge is also handheld for ease of use, it uses lasers to take contactless accurate measurements of wear parameters on the brake disc itself.

Rail Head Profile– another railway measurement which is important to monitor regularly is the railway profile measurement. This ensures the railway track itself is suitable for use and will not be dangerous for transport.

Again, these are portable devices for ease of use, they are designed for the non-contact registration of the cross-section of the railhead acting face. Results are displayed immediately and can be saved.

Wheel Real-time Geometry 3D Measuring System - is designed for contactless automatic measurement of geometrical parameters of railway wheels and uses a combination of 2D laser scanners, mounted wayside in the track area. Two systems available to accommodate drive-thru train speed max. These systems can be easily installed at any type of rail infrastructure

  • 3DWheel.60 = 60 km/h drive-thru
  • 3DWheel.120 = 120 km/h drive-thru

Calibration/Repair Services for Railway Gauges

It is important to calibrate railway gauges regularly – we would recommend every 12 months. Because they are used for safety procedures they must be checked for accuracy.

Ixthus offer calibration options for all these devices, please contact us for more information.

All our products come from our supplier Riftek, view the Riftek product range on our website.
