What is a Temperature Probe?

What is a Temperature Probe?

What is a Temperature Probe?

A temperature probe is a type of sensing device. They are available in different shapes and sizes for different applications.

Temperature probes are part of our range of temperature sensors, they are used within every industry and have different principles when it comes to temperature detection based on the type of temperature probe selected.

What is a Temperature Probe Used for?

Temperature probes are used in the majority of industries, some of the industries with the most uses of temperature probes are; medical, food and drink, motorsport and communication systems. Some applications which uses temperature probes are

Types of Temperature Probe

Temperature probes are available as different types, each of these types of temperature probes are available with different housings depending on the requirement of the application.

NTC - (Negative Temperature Coefficient) temperature probes use NTC thermistors as the temperature sensing element. They work as part of an electrical circuit, as the temperature increases, the resistance of the NTC thermistor decreases (and vice versa) causing a change in the output. They offer a quick response and are very sensitive.

RTD - (Resistance Temperature Detector) temperature probes work on a similar principle to NTC temperature probes but are generally more robust, offer a longer life and a wider temperature range.

Thermocouples - tend to be cheaper than RTD temperature probes and NTC temperature probes but are not as stable over time and therefore will require replacements more frequently. Thermocouples can measure much higher temperatures - some over 2,000°C

Bespoke Temperature Probes

Because all applications are different, very often a bespoke temperature probe is required. This could be because of the shape or size of the temperature probe, because of the temperature range required, the atmosphere temperature and the environment the temperature probe will need to function in.

If you require a bespoke solution to your temperature application or would like more information please contact us.

Temperature Probes from Ixthus

Many of our temperature probes are manufactured by our sister company Variohm Eurosensor. Take a look at these temperature probes here.

We also have a range from our supplier TE Connectivity.
