What is a thermistor? A thermistor is a type of highly sensitive temperature sensor. The name “thermistor” comes from the fact it is a THERMally sensitive resISITOR.
A thermistor measures temperature by detecting the change in resistance of the electrical current running through it.
What is a thermistor?
The most common type of thermistor is the NTC thermistor or Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistors. These are a highly accurate type of temperature sensor.
A thermistor is made up of a resistive element or bead and two wires. These wires can either come from the same end of the thermistor or sit in a straight line with the resistive element in the middle (axial formation).
The two wires are connected to an electrical circuit, when the sensing element is exposed to temperature the resistance changes. When the temperature rises, the resistance lowers and the electrical energy flows faster, when the temperature lowers, the resistance increases and the energy flows more slowly. Using this principle the exact temperature can be detected.
The thermistor can be potted into a terminal to enable them to be inserted into an application successfully. At Ixthus we can offer various temperature probes which consist of a thermistor and different terminals including ring terminal, hex bolt and brass probe.

Thermistors are often used for temperature detection because they have the following advantages;

- Highly sensitive giving them the ability to work over a small temperature range and still give accurate readings
