Calibrating sensors is a process which can improve a sensors performance by removing any structural errors or issues with sensor performance. Calibrating a sensor ensures it is functioning correctly and highly accurately.
Over time and with repeated use, sensors can sometimes become less accurate causing their outputs to be compromised. This does not mean that the sensor is not high quality or reliable, it simply requires a process to ensure it has not become slightly inaccurate over time.
Reasons for Calibrating Sensors
There are different reasons for calibrating sensors;
As a Routine Precaution
Many sensors may require calibration at regular intervals as a routine or precaution. This is common in areas where sensors come into contact with the public to ensure their safety.
We provide instruments for measuring rail wheel diameter and thickness; we recommend these are calibrated at regular intervals as a discrepancy in this type of measurement could be dangerous for personnel using rail transport.
This is the most common reason for sensor calibration; a sensor will sometimes continue to function without warning of inaccuracies, very often issue are not detected without regular calibration.
Working in Harsh Environments
Sometimes the surrounding environment of a sensor could have an impact on the performance. For example high temperatures or incredibly dusty or dirty. Calibrating a sensor is ideal as it ensures that the environment is not comprising the accuracy of the sensor.
During the Manufacturing Process
During manufacturing, sensors are calibrated to ensure they will function correctly when in the field. This is done as a precaution as sensors may yield slightly different readings.
Ensure a System Runs Smoothly
A sensor is often incorporated into a bigger machine or device. If the device begins to give inaccurate readings it could be any one of the incorporated components which is not functioning correctly. Calibrating a sensor which is incorporated into a bigger device could save money as replacing the entire machine could be costly.

There are a few options for calibration;
Calibration at our facility – we have the facility to be able to calibrate many sensors onsite at Ixthus, after speaking to one of our representatives you can send your sensors back to us for calibration.
Calibration by our Partners – for some calibrations we must send them to our partners. this depends on the sensor itself.
Mobile Calibration and Testing Device – We can offer a handheld testing and calibration device suitable for use with load cells. They are easy to use and require a PC with Windows 7 or later. This is more of a monitoring device for load cell and force sensors in use in awkward locations. The device can be used to check the performance of the load cell; however, this shouldn’t be used as a way to completely replace routine calibrations.If you have a sensor which requires calibration or would like more information please contact us.
