Types of Temperature Sensors

Temperature sensors are available in various types to suit different applications and industries. A different type of temperature sensor may be required due to its size, robustness, temperature range, working principle or connection options.

At Ixthus we have many different types of temperature sensors available, some of these are;

  • Thermistors
  • RTDs
  • Temperature probes
  • Thermocouples
  • Infrared temperature sensors

More About Types of Temperature Sensors

Thermistors – thermistors are known for being small and have a fast response time. They measure temperature by measuring the change in resistance of an electric current. The higher the temperature, the less resistance there will be.

Our thermistors can range from between 1K and 100K, they can be found on our website. They are either glass or epoxy coated which makes them suitable for different applications.

RTDs – RTD stands for Resistance Temperature Detector. They work in a similar way to thermistors and measure the change in resistance to monitor the temperature. They are also sensitive and small.

RTDs are more robust than thermistors and are more reliable over long periods of time. This makes them more costly.

Temperature Probes– Temperature probes are constructed using a temperature sensing element which may be potted into a terminal or housing.  The temperature probes we offer use either a thermistor sensing element or an RTD sensing element.

Many of our temperature probes can be customised to suit your requirements so make sure you contact us for more information.

Thermocouples – thermocouples are a more complex type of temperature sensor. They use two different metals and measure the difference in resistance to determine the temperature. Different metals will allow for different temperature ranges, so it is important to know the temperature range of the application if you are using a thermocouple.

Other types of temperature sensor – the above products are our most popular product ranges, we also offer digital temperature sensors, infrared temperature sensors and exhaust gas temperature sensors.

Another type of temperature sensor we offer are combined pressure and temperature sensors, these sensors combine an external temperature probe with a pressure sensor. These are particularly well suited to applications where space is limited.

Temperature Sensor Uses

Measuring temperature is an important aspect of many processes. This could be to make sure other devices do not overheat and become dangerous.

Some applications that use temperature sensors are;

  • Home Appliances
  • IT
  • Motorsport Applications
  • Food and beverage
  • Alcohol breathalysers
  • HVAC
  • Transit
  • Heat exchangers
  • Power and utilities
  • Industrial process
  • Laboratory and testing
  • Renewable energy
