Sensor Vs Transducer

At Ixthus Instrumentation, we have a vast portfolio containing different sensors and transducers.

In our experience, we have found that the terms “sensor” and “transducer” are used interchangeably. They are often confused with each other as the devices are so similar. Whilst it is not incorrect to refer to sensors as transducers or vice versa, there are some differences between these types of devices.

The main differences are around the output signal. Transducers are more complex devices whereas sensors are simpler.

Sensor Vs Transducer – The differences and Similarities

The table below shows the difference and similarities between Sensors and Transducers.

Transducer

Sensor

Sense changes in the environment

Give output signals due to the change

Are used as part of a bigger system

Convert measurements taken into a different output signal

Require an additional device to convert the measurement

Complex devices

Simple devices

Used for complex applications

Used for Simple Applications

Higher cost

Lower cost

The differences between the two devices are so subtle, therefore the terms are often used to describe the same devices.

The main differences are that a transducer can process and transform the signal whereas a sensor will take a measurement and will require an additional device to transform it. Because a transducer does not require the additional device they tend to be more expensive.

Transducers from Ixthus

We have a range of different transducers at Ixthus, these can be position or pressure.

Cable Extension Transducer – a cable extension transducer is a type of position transducer. They use a flexible wire or cable to measure position in applications where large stroke to length ratio is required.

LVDT – an LVDT is another type of position sensor. LVDT stand for Linear Variable Differential Transducer. They take accurate position measurements using non-contacting technology.

Pressure Transducer – a pressure transducer can also be called a pressure transmitter. They are devices used to take accurate pressure measurement in gases, liquids, and solids. Pressure transducers are used throughout almost every industry.

Sensors from Ixthus

Temperature Sensors – we have a range of temperature detection devices which are classed as sensors, these sensors can be used to measure temperature in many different applications, traditionally patient monitoring.

Pressure Switch – a pressure switch measures pressure and will activate when the pressure reaches a distinct level.
