What is a Pressure Transducer?

A pressure transducer is a device used for accurately measuring pressure. They can also be referred to as pressure transmitters or liquid level meters when being used in water. The type of pressure they measure can either be absolute, differential or gauge pressure.

To accurately measure real-time pressure, most pressure transducers use internal strain gauges that are bonded to the internal diaphragm inside the transducer. The pressure is then reflected off the diaphragm as it enters through the port, the strain gauges can measure the alteration in shape which can then be transferred into voltage and processed to give a pressure measurement.

What is a Pressure Transducer used for?

Pressure transducers are used throughout many industries for various applications where real time pressure is a required measurement. Some applications which used pressure sensors are;

HVAC Applications – pressure transducers are often required to monitor the pressure in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industries.

Motorsport and Commercial Vehicles – monitoring brake pressure, oil pressure and fuel pressure as well as being used in motorsport testing equipment.

Medical Applications – pressure transducers are often used in medical equipment to monitor patient or machine variables.

Safety-Critical Applications – we have pressure transducers rated SIL2 for safety-critical applications.

Agricultural Applications – like many industries, pressure transducers used within agriculture need to be highly robust and resistant to dirt and moisture so that their performance is not compromised.

Types of Pressure Transducer

There are different types of pressure transducers available to ensure that they are well suited to different environments.

The different types of pressure transducer that we have available at Ixthus include;

Standard range Industrial Pressure Transducers – with ranges up to 5000 bar

Liquid Level Meters – these are for use in underwater applications and measure the pressure within a tank.

Miniature Pressure Transducers – this type of pressure transducer is less than 5cm long and lightweight. Suitable for applications that have limited space.  

Intrinsically Safe– Either ATEX/IECEx and UL/CSA approved or SIL 2 rated.

Combined Pressure and Temperature Transducer – combined pressure and temperature transducers can measure both temperature and pressure in one device which saves space in tight environments.
